OUR BELT SYSTEM

    WHITE BELT

    The white belt symbolizes a clean slate and the purity of a new student with no prior knowledge of Songahm Taekwondo. It marks the start of their journey, full of potential and open to learning.

    ORANGE BELT

    The sun rises. At this level, the student begins to see the beauty of Taekwondo. They’re aware of the art’s potential but have yet to truly harness the power of correct technique.

    YELLOW BELT

    The sun shines yellow. At this stage, the student starts to grasp the foundational principles of Taekwondo. Like the sun rising higher in the sky, they begin to grow in understanding and skill, moving upward on their martial arts journey.

    CAMOUFLAGE BELT

    Hiding among the trees. At this level, the student recognizes their progress and emerging potential. Just as camouflage allows one to blend into the forest, the student learns to adapt and apply their skills in sparring, marking the transition into more dynamic training to advance in rank.

    GREEN BELT

    Pine needles are forming. At this stage, the student’s technique begins to show real development. Like pine needles growing in clusters, their fundamental movements start working in unison, building power and coordination as their understanding deepens.

    PURPLE BELT

    Coming to the mountain. The student reaches higher levels of training, where challenges grow steeper—like climbing a mountain. This belt represents facing and overcoming greater difficulty, building perseverance and mental strength along the journey.

    BLUE BELT

    Upward towards the sky. The student has passed the midpoint of their journey, focusing their energy and commitment upward toward the goal of black belt. This stage symbolizes growth, aspiration, and the drive to reach new heights.

    BROWN BELT

    Roots growing in soil. At this stage, the student has mastered many basic techniques and developed strong, deep roots in Taekwondo. Their foundation is solid, supporting continued growth and advanced learning.

    RED BELT

    Sun is setting. The student’s physical skills are well-developed but still require greater control. This belt symbolizes the need to focus on refining discipline—both mental and physical—to achieve mastery over technique and self.

    RED/BLACK BELT

    Sun breaks through night. As the sun sets on one stage of training, the student prepares to enter a new phase as a black belt candidate. This belt represents transition—recognizing what has been learned while embracing the challenges and responsibilities ahead.

    BLACK BELT

    Absence of color. This rank signifies the completion of the nine color-belt grades in Songahm Taekwondo. It represents the student’s ability to absorb and unify all the knowledge, skill, and discipline gained along the journey—marking both an achievement and the beginning of a lifelong path of learning and mastery.
